| The
4 C ’s |
 |
When
it comes to diamonds, bigger isn’t necessarily better. There
are actually four distinct components that go into determining the
quality of a diamond, commonly referred to as the “4 C’s.”
They
are as follows: |
Cut: How
a diamond is cut by a jeweler can determine how it shines and shows
its brilliance. |
Clarity: Imperfections and spots within a diamond
can reduce its ability to reflect light as well as its outer
appearance. Clarity is graded on a coded scale ranging from FL
(flawless) down to I3 (obvious imperfections).
Color: A perfect diamond is colorless, so the
less color, the better. This is graded on a letter scale ranging
from D down to L.
Carat: This is the unit of measure used for
the size of the diamond. But keep in mind that a large stone
with a poor cut, color, and clarity may be worth less than a
higher-quality smaller stone. |
