Don’t Even Think About These Dates

State College is a special place. It’s home to a world-class university but is still essentially a small town. Despite the area’s growth in recent years, there are only so many hotel rooms to go around. It’s important to remember that there are certain dates when it’s just not a good idea to schedule a wedding in State College.
These include the following:

Penn State Football Weekends.
The schedules are usually set a couple of years in advance, so there’s no excuse for not knowing the dates. If there is one time your wedding guests will not be able to find hotel rooms, it is on a football Saturday. These weekends cause major traffic snarl-ups as well. If at all possible, avoid these days in your planning.

Penn State Graduation Weekends
. The biggest is the one in the spring, which definitely should be avoided, but there are also December and August graduation weekends. Make sure you check Penn State’s website to see the academic calendar for the upcoming year. (www.psu.edu)

Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts™ (“Arts Fest”). Next to Penn State Football, this is probably the most crowded State College gets. Arts Fest always begins the week after the 4th of July, and runs Wednesday through Sunday.
While the above-listed weekends are probably the most important times to avoid, there are some other dates to keep in mind as well.

Pennsylvania Special Olympics. This has become quite a large annual event and draws thousands of participants and their families from around the state. While the participants stay in Penn State dorms, many of their family members and supporters do stay on local hotels.

Penn State Move-in Weekend.
Usually about the second-to-last weekend in August, this weekend not only involves issues of hotel space but traffic delays on move-in Saturday.

NCAA/PIAA Championships. Sometimes, Penn State hosts national championships for collegiate sports or state championships for high school sports. In the past few years they have hosted Wrestling and Men’s Gymnastics championships, and holds the state high school volleyball championships every few years. It’s a good idea to try to find out if any events like this are planned at the same time you wish to have your wedding, because otherwise the sport’s fans will be snatching up those hotel rooms.

To find out about advance schedule of events, contact the Central Pennsylvania Convention & Visitors Bureau or each organization directly.
