Everyone at the magazine is pretty excited this month. Most of us love college football and Penn State is pretty much a favorite team here. We do have three staffers who favor Wisconsin, Michigan State and Syracuse, but we don’t hold that against them!

The second annual Pigskin Digest is bigger and better than last year. Kudos to Assistant Editor David “Fig” Higgins who, with his team of writers, compiled an outstanding array of articles, ranging from “A Big Ten Preview” (pages 16-19) to a heartwarming piece by Jeff Brown on Fran Fisher (pages 10-12). All of Nittany Nation knows this “class act” as the former “voice of Penn State football.”

Working with quarterback Daryll Clark was especially fun. Speaking of class acts, this young man exudes all that is right about college football. He is well spoken, gracious and a definite team player. A leader on the field now, he will clearly be a leader in life in the future. I have always been proud of my Alma Mater, but meeting No. 17 reinforces what I have long felt. “WE ARE. PENN STATE PROUD.”

From football to the arts to home and garden, SCM is full of great reads this issue. Sit back and relax. And we hope to see you again next month!

Hi guys~
I just finished “Inside These Walls” (August 2009) and I wanted to thank you so very much! I cannot thank you enough for featuring the program. It means the world to me, the handlers, CPL and Smithfield of course!
Cliff– Thanks for taking the time to get to know “the guys.” They will be thrilled with what you wrote, as am I. It really captures what the program is all about. It all really came together nicely and I hope you get some really great feedback on the story. It’s amazing!

Thank you both so much!
Leslie Burgard

Dear Erika,
I just read the very well-written cover story, “Behind These Walls” in the August issue. It struck me that prisoners needed to “qualify” to be in this program. I agree wholeheartedly with the fact that anyone known to abuse animals or children shouldn’t be allowed to be in this program. However, I also considered, what if....
...anyone could apply/compete to be in this fraternity of dog trainers (we might be surprised by who is interested and how they might strive/work to be accepted into the program)
...the dog training program could be used as a rehabilitative tool. The emotions expressed by those inmates who became part of the “brotherhood” of dog trainers exemplified what we as citizens would like to instill in those incarcerated individuals before they rejoin society.
There are great possibilities in this program for bettering human life, even for those serving a life sentence.

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the fascinating article, “Behind These Walls” in the August edition. Please pass some kudos to Cliff White.
